I read it at a time when I was dealt a bad hand, one I couldn’t change or control.

The cheongsam… 👗 A symbol of modern Chinese

The cheongsam… 👗

A symbol of modern Chinese femininity before the Communist Cultural Revolution, rose to popularity in the 1920s–40s among Shanghai and Hong Kong socialites. Its blend of traditional details and Western tailoring created an iconic silhouette. By the late 1950s and early ‘60s, the cheongsam “craze” had reached America, and today it remains a timeless emblem of oriental culture and elegance.

✨ I was thrilled to receive a photo I had never seen before of my great-grandmother wearing a cheongsam. She was a no-nonsense woman. I remember her visiting us once and spending the entire day in the kitchen making the most delicious desserts. At the end of the day, when I asked, “Mama, can you teach me how to make them?” she replied, without missing a beat, “If you were really interested in cooking, you would’ve been in this kitchen helping all day. So no, I won’t teach you.” Then she laughed.

A fierce woman with a strong spirit, and now, a beautiful glimpse into her elegance too. ✨

Un símbolo de la feminidad moderna china antes de la revolucion cultural comunista, alcanzó popularidad en las décadas de 1920 a 1940 entre la alta sociedad de Shanghái y Hong Kong. Su mezcla de detalles tradicionales y sastrería occidental creó una silueta icónica. Para finales de los años 50 y principios de los 60, la “fiebre” del cheongsam había llegado a Estados Unidos, y hoy sigue siendo un emblema atemporal de la cultura y la elegancia oriental.

✨ Me emociono recibir una foto que nunca habia visto de mi bisabuela luciendo un cheongsam. Era una mujer de caracter fuerte. Recuerdo que una vez nos visito y paso todo el dia en la cocina preparando los postres mas deliciosos. Al final del dia, cuando le pregunte: “Mama, ¿me puedes enseñar a hacerlos?”, me respondio sin titubear: “Si de verdad te interesara cocinar, habrias estado en la cocina ayudando todo el dia. Asi que no, no te voy a enseñar.” Y luego se echo a reir.

Una mujer firme, con un espiritu inquebrantable, y ahora, un hermoso vistazo a su elegancia tambien. ✨
